Carbonized Series: Chlóe & Enigma
Chlóe and Enigma, two chairs that need no introduction, reinvent themselves in their carbonized versions while preserving their minimalist essence and visual impact. Chlóe, recognized at the A' Design Awards, is defined by its balance between lightness and solidity. Enigma, true to its name, invites an intuitive and sensory interpretation of its forms, challenging apparent simplicity.
Both pieces have undergone the ancient Japanese process of Shou Sugi Ban (焼杉板), where wood is transformed through fire. More than just a technique, it is an act of reverence for the material, carbonizing its surface to reveal deep black and gray textures that tell the story of time and matter.
The selected wood undergoes a controlled ritual: precise burning, cooling, brushing, and finishing with natural oils. Each step accentuates its grain and creates a patina that not only enhances its beauty but also provides protection. The resulting carbon layer acts as a natural shield against moisture, pests, and environmental wear.
Shou Sugi Ban does not seek perfection; it celebrates organic imperfection and the fleeting beauty of change. This technique enhances the durability of Chlóe and Enigma, allowing them to transcend indoor and covered outdoor spaces without losing their structural integrity or aesthetic strength.
The contrast between the pure design of the chairs and the raw texture of carbonized wood creates a dialogue between the industrial and the organic. These are pieces not just to be seen but to be experienced.
Chlóe and Enigma, in their carbonized versions, do not aim to blend in; they are designed to stand out. Chairs that tell stories, invite touch and silence, where design speaks for itself.
